Monstrous Regiment auditions

Fancy a turn on stage as a girl in man’s trousers, a swashbuckling sergeant, a werewolf, a troll, or a vampire who really likes coffee?

From Wed 29th July to Saturday 1st August 2015 CADS will be performing Stephen Brigg’s adaption of Terry Pratchett’s award-winning fantasy novel, Monstrous Regiment. We have dates, we have a venue – Redland Park United Reformed Church on Whiteladies Road – but what we need now is a (rather large) cast!

To sign up for an audition slot (evenings of Mon 30th,Tues 31st March or Wed 1st April) please go to: http://doodle.com/s8zavvhmc8g3kpqk and sign up with your email address (so we can contact you!). Please be available for call-backs on Thursday 2nd April, regardless of which night you audition.

Auditions are open, so you don’t have to be a current CADS member to try for a part, but if you accept a role then you will need to join and pay your membership fees (£15) before the first rehearsal.

For an idea of what parts are available see the character descriptions: http://tinyurl.com/qbn7p5l!

This fun and brilliantly witty play has a great selection of characters of various shapes and sizes, set against a backdrop of conflict, espionage and bloody-minded stupidity. This production will be a great place to have fun with friends old and new, so sign up for an audition and be part of the show!

Some potentially Frequently Asked Questions…

What’s the play about then?

Based on Terry Pratchett’s 2003 novel Monstrous Regiment (see here for a detailed plot summary – warning: SPOILERS!), this is the renowned author’s 31st story set on the fantastical Discworld:

The tiny, impoverished country of Borogravia is down to their last regiment, and their last scrap of hope. Unfortunately there’s something rather odd about the regiment in question.  The Monstrous Regiment is made up of a reformed vampire, Igor the highly progressive surgeon, a troll, and a young woman who discovers that a pair of socks shoved down her trousers is a good way to open doors in a man’s army. Suddenly the new recruits are in the middle of the war, without any training or uniforms that fit. Our heroine Polly, on a mission to find out what’s happened to her soldier brother Paul, finds that to survive she will have to fight dirty, pretend to know how to shave and even occasionally dress up as a woman…

How many parts are available?

We’re not able to guarantee that everyone who auditions will get a part, but this is a play with a large cast (27 speaking roles!). These come in various sizes, and there is a lot of potential for doubling and possibly tripling up roles.

What will the commitment be?

This obviously depends somewhat on the size of your role; we appreciate that being in a show involves a lot of commitment so please let us know on your audition form what size role you would want to commit to.  Rehearsals are planned for Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, with weekend rehearsals required nearer to the show.  There will be a space on your audition form to let us know about particular days or dates you know you can’t make.

What will happen at the auditions?

Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to give yourself time to fill in the short audition form and look at the audition extracts.  There will be someone in the bar downstairs to meet you and go through anything you’re not sure of.  You’ll be called upstairs for your audition slot and the very friendly director and producer will be there, with a colleague to read through the part with you so you have someone to act with. You may be asked to read for other parts you haven’t necessarily prepared for, but don’t worry, you will be given time to read through the script extracts! They might take a quick photo (to help us remember who’s who!) but after that you’re free to go and relax at the lovely bar downstairs 🙂
