Auditions for Bleak Expectations

Auditions for CADS new Dickensian parody play will be on 21st and 23rd April, with call backs on Sunday 26th April.

Have you ever wanted to be a moustache twirling villain, a happy go lucky scamp or a swooning ingénue who definitely (probably) won’t die? Then how conveniently specific, because all of those and more make up the cast of this wonderfully hammy and absurd play. Bleak Expectations (by Mark Evans) is the theatrical version of the award winning radio series. It’s a silly, camp Charles Dickens parody told by Sir Phillip Bin, all about his exploits with sisters Pippa and Poppy and best friend Harry Biscuit, as they navigate the rigid expectations of Victorian England and the evil machinations of Mr Gently Benevolent.

This show is going to be a LOT of fun, featuring dastardly villains, preposterous names, pulse-quickening romances, heart-rending death scenes, and definitely, probably, hopefully a happy ending.

We are casting 10-12 actors, most of whom will be playing multiple characters, so it’s a great opportunity to play with voices and physicality. It also means we’re likely to ask you to read for multiple parts so it’s a good idea to have a quick look through all of them (but we don’t expect you to prepare more than one!).

Important Dates and Information:

Auditions will be held on 21st April upstairs at The Lansdown, 23rd April at Highbury Vaults, between 7 and 10 pm. You will be emailed with an audition slot; if you have specific time constraints please email us. Call backs are on 26th April in the evening at the Lansdown, and you’ll be notified by 25th if you’re needed. If you can’t make one of those dates, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Rehearsals will start in May, twice a week (probably Tuesdays and Thursdays) until the first week of August.

The tech & dress rehearsals will be on 3rd and 4th August. Performances will run from 5th to 8th August (including a Sat matinee).

Shows will be performed at The Bristol Improv Theatre. Please note that unfortunately the theatre is downstairs with no lift so is not fully accessible.
